Bromeliad 'Red Earth Star' Cryptanthus zonatus
We LOVE these cute little guys and this is not your common Bromeliad!
The majority of Bromeliads are epiphytes, meaning they grow on trees and get their moisture from rain and humidity. This is not the case with these Earth Stars that are native to Brazil. This variety is red (note we also list pink Earth Stars). In the tropical rainforests there, they grow in soil in moist conditions under other plants which means you water them differently than their other bromeliad relatives. Keep the soil evenly moist rather than watering the throat. When planting them, use a mix which has ground bark, coir (or peat), sand and perlite – it needs to be well drained, but don't let them dry out like you would with a succulent.
Earth Stars prefer indirect sunlight. Shade from tall trees outdoors or a sunny room without direct sun exposure is ideal. Remember they have adapted to survive under the cover of trees in humid climates. Too much direct sun can cause bleached or sunburned spots on the leaves. If your plant seems stressed and these marks appear, move it to a spot with less direct sunlight. On the other hand, if your plant does not get enough light it will begin to look light green in color. And NEVER, EVER leave them outside to be exposed to frost and freezing temperatures.
Wow! This plant looks exactly like the photo. Such beautiful coloring. Very healthy, fills the pot. Happy with this purchase.
